Family
Hi! I’m Kris! And I’m so gratefully you are here! Your journey to growth begins here. Whether its in your home or your garden, come and grow with me. Let’s grow together.
Friends, a friendly reminder: gardening isn’t reserved for folks with massive backyards, sprawling estates, or vast farmlands. Even if you only have a small balcony, a tiny patio, or just a windowsill, you can create a thriving garden. I am so excited to be bringing you an entire series on gardening in small spaces, and first up is growing on your windowsill!
If you only have a windowsill, herbs are your best friends! You can grow so many herbs if you only have a windowsill as your garden. For instance, basil, parsley, mint, and chives all thrive on windowsills. There is no excuse to not have fresh herbs for all your culinary adventures!
Some herbs, like basil, can even be propagated from cuttings. Endless basil for your pesto cravings!
Why you should grow herbs on your windowsill? They are compact and versatile, and they don’t demand a lot of space. They actually thrive in small pots or containers. If you are are looking to upgrade your cooking, herbs provide so much fresh flavor. Some herbs, like basil, can even be propagated from cuttings. Endless basil for your pesto cravings! Fresh mint, basil, or chives are an instant flavor bomb to any dish. And the best thing of all, your windowsill will smell so good. A little bit of rosemary or a spring of lavender will provide the best aromatherapy for your kitchen.
Lettuce
I can imagine it right now. You eating fresh salad straight from your windowsill. That’s right – lettuce, spinach, and arugula can all be grown in small planters or pots right by a sunny window in your home. Nestled in pots and containers, you can have vibrant green lettuce leaves ready for your salad bowl anytime you want.
So how do you do it? First pick out a south-facing window. Place your pots on a south-facing windowsill for maximum light exposure. Next, make sure you ensure your plants are getting good air circulation. Don’t forget to open the window occasionally to let in fresh air. Lettuce appreciates a gentle breeze.
If you only have a windowsill, you have to try growing microgreens! They are perfect topping to any meals and they are packed with so many nutrients!
So what are microgreens? They are mini-greens are harvested after the first set of true leaves appears. Think of them as the teenage version of full-grown plants. Microgreens also grow quickly—ready to harvest in just a few weeks, and they are more nutrient-dense than their mature counterparts. And best of all – there is an endless variety you can grow. From herbs to brassicas, you have a rainbow of flavors at your finger tips.
What do you think? Would you try growing herbs, lettuce, or microgreens on your windowsill?
